Project Warmth
Helping families in need in Nepal
Since 2016, Nepal
We believe that the path out of poverty and to prosperity leads through education, and especially the education of young girls. Today, in Nepal, 1 or 3 marriages are underage. Only 42% of couples use contraception, and within that, only 63% are using modern methods. The country has seen a dramatic drop in fertility over the past 3 decades, but its population is still growing, and even with the very modest standard of living it has on average, it has a large and growing biocapacity deficit meaning that it is overpopulated.
Closely partnering with, and building on the fantastic work of the Koseli Foundation, Project Warmth is an initiative run by Sneh and I to help a few underprivileged but talented girls in the slum communities of Kathmandu, Nepal. We assist these girls for a longer span of time (3-7 years) through their studies, with the objective of them gaining financial independence, and a significantly better, sustainable life trajectory, through education. By strengthening them, we’re hoping to give a few, highly talented girls a chance to fulfill their potential and become beacons, pulling their communities along as they soar.
Our methodology is the following:
We work with the Koseli Foundation to identify highly talented grade 8 girls, whose families are in dire situations, but are caring and hard working.
We find a small group of sponsors (2-3 per family) among our friends and networks to create a reliable, consistent platform of support.
The sponsor groups discuss and align on strategies for assistance, and put up the money to implement it.
We maintain direct and close relationships with the girls and their families, and work with trusted local helpers for on the ground implementation of strategies.
Our toolbox includes: financial support; education advice; misc problem-solving advice; connections; exposure to new perspectives / ideas; friendship.
As a side initiative in 2022, we’re developing an interactive ‘Critical Life Decisions’ workshop, that we hope to pilot with many grade 12 students among the Koseli alumni, to flex their big picture visioning and planning muscles.
We owe massive thanks to the Koseli Foundation and Madhu for spearheading operations on the ground in Kathmandu. Also, we’re forever grateful to Renu for her initiative to start up Koseli and to inspire and mentor our Project Warmth as well.
/Our initiative is run entirely on volunteer energy, there are no operating costs apart from transfer fees, all sponsorships go 100% to the families./
